2. There are 2 abstract paintings in the intro- O'Keefe's, Jack in the Pulpit, and Albers'. Homage to The Square. Look at both.

b. After looking at both, how would you define abstract art?

1. Why does the text book make such a big deal about a pebble?
2. “Why was the Venus of Willendorf” named Venus by archeologists? What are some problems with the name "Venus"?
3. The paintings of bulls and bison in the caves of Lascaux and Altamira are recognizable, and in some cases very detailed. But what aspects of the paintings on the cave walls have nothing to do with realism? in altamira section
4. What are some speculations about why caves like Lascaux and Altamira were painted? See “Art in the Old Stone Age”
5. Where and how was the in Ghazal Statue found? After reading about Neolithic settlements in Mesopotamia, what do you think the statues’ function might have been?
TUESDAY Sep 9
You will prepare a 1-2 PARAGRAPH "Visual Analysis" which I will explain and model on Monday in class.
The questions you must answer are: How does the "Victory Stele of Naram Sin's" composition tell the story? How does the design reinforce Naram Sin's power? Make sure to use specific terms from your vocabulary and specific terms to refer to details in the Stele itself.

3. Why is it so easy to see the palace as mythical? (consider decorations as well as citing and layout)
4. Egyptians used images of nature in their wall paintings and carvings. How is the natural imagery different in Minoan painting on walls and vessels?
